The History of Granite

For centuries, granite has been one of the most trusted natural stones due to its timeless beauty and exceptional strength. The word granite originates from the Latin term meaning “coarse-grained crystallized rock.” It is primarily composed of quartz and feldspars — minerals that provide durability, color, luster, and structural integrity. Together, they create a stone stronger than steel.

Granite formed over 300 million years ago, making it one of the oldest igneous rocks on Earth. Its use in construction dates back to 2580 BC in Ancient Egypt, where it was used in the Great Pyramids for central chambers because of its hardness, resistance, and aesthetic value.

In South India, Raja Raja Chola built the world’s first temple entirely from granite in the 11th century AD. The massive gopuram alone weighs an estimated 81 tonnes, showcasing granite’s incredible structural capability.

During the Roman Empire, granite was prized for its beauty, strength, and durability. It was used in monuments such as the Pantheon and Roman bathhouses. By the Renaissance period, improved quarrying techniques made granite more accessible, expanding its use in homes, churches, monuments, and luxury palaces.

Today, granite continues to be widely used for monuments, paving, bridges, countertops, flooring, wall cladding, and architectural features — standing as a symbol of endurance and elegance through time.
